Friday night is a special time for Jewish families. According to the Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) Jewish Parent Page, “Jewish tradition asks us to emulate God on the Sabbath day – just as God ceased working and rested, so we too cease working and rest.

"Whether we believe in a literal God of creation, a God who set into motion the evolution of the world, or another interpretation of how God works...we set aside one day each week to celebrate the magnificence of creation and our partnership with God.”

Family Shabbat Celebrations

For modern families, Shabbat is the time of the week to bring family together, reconnect after a busy week and show gratitude for things big and small. Some families celebrate the holiday by going to Friday night services; others have a meal at home or friends. Often, those with young children find incorporating a weekly Shabbat ritual into the schedule challenging. Parents work late, children have short attention spans and there are after school activities.
